Winter is the season for citrus, and the blood orange is a top contender for best in show. Their peels are marbled with purple, and their juice is a gorgeous blend of ruby and fuchsia. Blood oranges have notes from practically every other type of citrus; grapefruit, meyer lemon, and lime to name a few. This recipe really highlights their sweet/tart duality, and somehow brought out flavors of hibiscus and watermelon too. Gin is a natural partner with citrus, and a bit of St. Germain adds another botanical element. The spice from a homemade ginger syrup leaves a lingering bite, and the fizz from a splash of ginger ale or soda makes for a refreshing antidote to dark winter evenings. Not to mention, it tastes like the nectar of the Gods. Make these delicious roasted maple rosemary almonds alongside and your kitchen will smell divine.
Blood Orange Gin & Ginger Fizz
3 oz gin
3 oz blood orange juice (from 3 or 4 oranges)
1 oz St. Germain
1/2 oz ginger simple syryp
splash of ginger ale or club soda
sliced blood orange for garnish
For the Ginger Syrup
4 oz fresh ginger, unpeeled
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 cup water
1. Make the ginger syrup. Slice the ginger root crosswise into thin rounds, then chop into small chunks. In a non-reactive saucepan, combine the chopped ginger with the sugar and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar, then lower the heat to a simmer. Simmer for 30 to 45 minutes. Let cool completely, then strain through a fine mesh strainer.
2. To make the cocktail, juice the blood oranges. Fill a large cocktail shaker or mason jar with ice. Add gin, St. Germain, blood orange juice, and ginger syrup and shake well. Fill two tumblers or large wine glasses with fresh ice. Pour the cocktail over the ice and top each glass with some ginger ale or soda water. Garnish with a thin slice of blood orange cut in a half moon.
Roasted Maple Rosemary Almonds
makes 2 cups
2 cups roasted, salted almonds
3 tblsp Grade A maple syrup
2 tblsp extra virgin olive oil
1 tblsp finely chopped fresh rosemary
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Use a spatula to toss together all ingredients on the baking sheet. Roast for 10 minutes, turning once.
